Instructions After Dental Implant Surgery
Some people experience a headache following the procedure. This is typically of no significance and the prescribed medicine usually brings relief.
Bleeding - A small amount of blood in the saliva is normal for the first 24 hours. Excessive bleeding, which you cannot control with simple pressure, is not normal and should be reported immediately by calling (650) 962-8773 during normal business hours (Mon – Thu 9 – 7 pm) or (408) 591-8217 for emergency after office hours.
Oral Hygiene - Good oral hygiene is essential to good healing. The night of surgery, use the prescribed Periogard Oral Rinse before bed. The day after surgery, the Periogard should be used twice daily, after breakfast and before bed. Be sure to rinse for at least 30 seconds then spit it out. Warm salt water rinses (teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) should be used at least 4-5 times a day, as well, especially after meals. Do not brush the surgical areas for 48 hours following the surgery. After 48 hours, be gentle initially with brushing the surgical areas. You should brush your teeth normally including the implant healing cap after 48 hours.
Swelling and Stiffness - Swelling and discomfort can be minimized by holding an ice pack on the outside of your face and cold water inside your mouth, adjacent to the treated area. This should be done for several hours, keeping cold on for 10 minutes and removing it for 10 minutes. Swelling does not usually mean there is an infection. If mild swelling and puffiness do occur after the first day, apply a warm moist compress to the affected area. Swelling usually peaks on the third day after treatment.
Diet - Eat soft foods and avoid hot liquids or food on the next two days following surgery. And, as much as possible, please try to chew on untreated areas of your mouth. Your diet should contain a lot of protein and fluids. Milk shakes are great (doctors orders).
Dressing and Sutures - Please leave your sutures or dressings intact. You will be given a post-operation appointment to remove the suture or dressing.
Exercise - Avoid excessive exertion for 48 hours following surgery. Excessive exertion can cause bleeding.
Pain Medications - Please follow the instructions on any prescribed medications very carefully. Prescriptions given for discomfort need to be taken only so long as you feel that you need them. Mild discomfort is best treated by nonprescription medicine, such as Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Advil (ibuprofen). Do not take any of the above medication if you are allergic, or have been instructed by your doctor not to take it.
Antibiotic - Antibiotic prescriptions, including mouth rinses, should be used as directed to help prevent infection. This is very important.
Smoking and Alchohol - Smoking should be avoided as it can be very damaging. Alcohol consumption should be avoided for 48 hours, or as directed on your prescription bottles.
Dentures and Other Dental Appliance - Please do not wear removable tooth replacement appliance for up to 10 days immediately following the surgery - unless you specifically have been requested to do so. Be sure to follow the directions given to you.
